Somebody that I happened to know works in a huge corporate company.
One fine day she told me that her boss now has a new boss.
Before that her boss was reporting to someone and after a while, her boss has a new boss and the new boss reports that that someone else.
In short, her boss has a new boss who is sandwiched between her boss and that someone else.
To her, it means that’s an extra layer of administrative work which means to say that the approval matrix will take a longer time and more hassle.
Decision will be slower and more unnecessary discussions will be conducted in the name of check and balance.
It also means more exchanges in emails and more possibility of differed opinion.
The element of stress will creep in unknowingly.
At the same time this is done with the expectation of managing her current boss and her boss’ boss.
More efforts have to be invested to cultivate a good working relationship and perhaps more constraint in the cardssince nobody really knows how that new boss will operate.
Perhaps more meetings will be held even though some may just be non constructive.
If the new person plays politics then in a way it could also be messy.
She will need to be on her toes and will expect some changes in the style of working.
This is expected as no boss will enter an organization and does’nt make change.
The boss is brought in for a reason so he must show that changes are inevitable and for the betterment of the company.
Generally only very few things will remain status quo.
The good part about implementing changes is that you will be given time to show results.
If you maintain everything to the status quo even though that’s the best thing to do, the company will wonder why do they need to hire you in the first place.
The new boss is brought in for a reason.
And to fulfill that reason, changes must be made.
If the changes do not achieve the desired results the new boss can mention that it’s a new initiatives and every single new initiative will need a paradigm shift in the working culture there more time is needed to achieve the goals.
It’s in essence a way to buy more time.
Which generally all new boss will want to do.
Every new boss will also want to safeguard their position and make it as much secured as possible.
In this case, a little while down the road the new boss will hire more subordinates perhaps on the pretext of focussing on certain areas of work.
However it is always understood that this type of hiring will be cultivating his own team in the organization so that he will be in a position of influence.
It means in the long run, the operational expenses will skyrocket as the new hired boss will hire more subordinates and will implement new initiatives that will cost even more money as he must be seen to be gung-Ho about the initiatives and bringing about the necessary change that will add more value to the company.
To my friend, his climb on the corporates ladder will be longer and harder as there might be new staff being hired to take away some of her responsibilities this reducing her influence even more in the area of expertise.
If the company do not make a quantum leapt in revenue it also means that her take home bonus will be lesser as some of the additional expenses will be incurred due to the hiring of the new boss and the many corporate initiatives that might be launched in the future.
She will have possibly more work and greater stress however possibly less bonus payout.
If she thinks hard about this, she will be demoralized.
Her work quality might suffer.
On the other hand, she could try very much to improve her quality of work and impress the new boss about her credentials and work rate.
She might work harder to show to the new boss that she deserves a promotion.
Maybe perhaps taking over her current boss ‘ position.
In the meantime, her current boss will also feel the pressure maybe try to increase the work rate to impress the new boss.
In short, everybody will probably try to impress the new boss just to save their jobs.
If the new boss initiative some ludicrous initiatives which will guarantee failure nobody will dare to comment as no one wants to be in the firing line especially with a new boss who is eager to prove himself that he is the right man for the job.
Customers will most likely take a back seat.
As boardrooms politics will take centre stage.
Politics will rear its ugly head.
And customers in the end will be at the losing end.
As for my friend, I m not sure that’s what she really wants.
